Are you a difficult person to work for?

After a full day offsite, in the informal dinner, a senior team leader, who probably had one too many, remarked, “I am a very difficult person to deal with at office and at home”.

Many around him chuckled, some winked and others nodded their heads as if acknowledging the reality. This incident gave a lot of fuel for thought and entertainment…..I am sure he would not have spoken his heart out like this if he had been sober.

How do you deal with such leaders who are in a state of denial?

In this article from HBR, there are 5 coaching questions you can ask yourself to be better leaders and managers:

Are your standards high or are they unrealistic?

Are you focused on the outcome or micromanaging the process?

Are you using delegation as a tool for development or are you limiting people’s growth by dumping work on them?

Are you recognizing what’s good about your team or simply criticizing their mistakes?

Are you focused solely on transactional outcomes, or do you care about long-term relationships?
